Architecture and Urban Planning

The College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Beijing University of Technology, established in May 2003, has set up the Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban Planning. Some provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as the Key Research Base of National Cultural Heritage Administration on “Safety Evaluation and Disaster Control Base for Timber Historic Architecture”, Engineering and Technological Center for Historic Building Conservation, and national research institutions like the National Planning and Review Committee for Urban Earthquake Disaster Prevention, and the Academic Committee on Safety and Disaster Prevention Planning of the Urban Planning Society of China, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Committee of the Chinese National Committee for the International Council on Monuments and Sites are developing and operating by the College. The Subject of Architecture is a key discipline supported by the Beijing Municipal Education Committee, offering first-class subject master programs.

Department of Architecture

Founded in 1980, the Department of Architecture began enrolling undergraduate students of architecture (five-year system). In 1996, the discipline-Architectural Design and Theory was granted a conferring unit. In 1998, the discipline Architecture passed the preliminary evaluation conducted by National Professional Steering Committee for Higher Education of Architecture (grade B: 4 years), and passed the further evaluation respectively in 2002, 2006 and 2010. In 2008, it ranked the 13th in the national professional evaluation conducted by Ministry of Education of China (MOE). Furthermore, the discipline Architecture was recognized as a Beijing municipal pilot discipline with distinctive feature in 2009, and the next year a national one, and then selected one of the first batch disciplines of Outstanding Engineer Cultivation Program (MOE) in 2010. The Architecture is one of the Beijing municipal key disciplines.  In 2010, the architecture discipline became one of the first full-time pilot programs tailored for Master of Engineering (MOE), and passed the inspection in 2013.

To date, we have cultivated a total of 1026 undergraduates and 243 postgraduate students, and more than 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students are now pursuing degrees abroad. We have been dedicating to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talents with solid theoretical background and practical skills in engineering. Our students are widely praised by employers.

Now the department boasts 7 full professors, 12 associate professors and 20 lecturers.

Department of Urban Planning

Since its establishment, the Department of Urban Planning is developing rapidly with the teaching system being constantly improved and the teaching activities running in an orderly manner. It has been upholding the guiding ideology of “Relying on Beijing and Serving Beijing”. Its goal is to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talents with solid theoretical background, innovation capability and skills in international exchanges, in order to meet the needs of Beijing's social and economic development, as well as the needs of urban and rural planning and construction. At present, it has completed the third round revision on teaching plan, practical teaching plan and curriculum.

Our students have made remarkable achievements in various competitions and conferences organized by National Steering Committee of Urban and Rural Planning Education in China and other organizations. From 2015 to 2017, a number of undergraduate students majoring in urban and rural planning won awards in national competitions with excellent research reports on urban design and urban & rural social practices. In particular, three undergraduates won the first prize in the 15th Challenge Cup National Academic Works Competition for College Students.

Department of Urban Planning

In terms of international exchanges, the department has carried out extensive cooperation with many European and American universities, for example, we have cooperated with Technische Universiteit Delft and University of South Australia in establishing permanent Joint Design Studios and Short Course for 11 consecutive years. We’ve conducted the 3+2 program-three years at home and two years abroad-with Cardiff University in jointly cultivating talents, and have sent 4 undergraduates to study abroad in 2018. We also has collaborated with University of Cincinnati in launching the “4+1” joint cultivation program, and have sent students to pursue overseas education from three grades. As an IFoU (The International Forum on Urbanism) member unit, we have participated in the summer and winter international joint design workshops hosted by IEoU and joint by many noted architectural and planning colleges at home and abroad, and have managed to host the event for several times.
